St.Luke's has become a Community Partner for King Elementary (1849 Forest Avenue). King is currently has a Backpack Buddy program directly through The Food Bank of Iowa serving 80 children. By becoming a direct Partner with King, we free up 80 backpacks from The Food Bank of Iowa to go to a new school on the wait list.

St. Luke's will also Partner with Monroe Elementary (2250 30th Street). Monroe will begin it's Backpack Buddy program in January 2012 serving 80-100 children.

Volunteers are needed to help pack the bags that will be delivered each week to King and Monroe.

Each Backpack Contains:

2 breakfast items (single serve cereal, oatmeal)

2 servings of 2% shelf stable milk 

2 servings of 100% fruit juice

2 fruit cups

1 main meal (soup, pasta, stew) 

1 peanut butter cup

1 pudding cup 

2 snacks (fruit snacks, granola bars, beef sticks, etc.) 

The food will be brought to St. Luke's once per month in bulk and will then be packaged into clean plastic grocery sacks for 4 weeks of delivery. Sacks will then be stored at St. Luke's and delivered weekly to the schools for distribution to the children.

Volunteers are needed to pack sacks on the 3rd Saturday of each month beginning at 10am at St. Luke's.

We will also need clean plastic grocery sacks! A collection box is available in the coat closet at St. Luke's for drop off of grocery sacks anytime!
