OUTREACH/MISSIONS
Angel Food Ministries
St. Luke's is proud to be a Host Site and Drop Site for Angel Food Ministries. Since our first distribution in January 2007 of just 75 units at our one location in Central Iowa, we have witnessed tremendous growth. St. Luke's has been instrumental on helping over a dozen new Sites begin in Central Iowa serving thousands of families each month. Over 7,000 total units have been distributed through St. Luke's to date and we were the #2 Distributing Host Site in the Nation in 2008.

Thanksgiving Dinner
Each year, St. Luke's members come together to cook and serve a full traditional Thanksgiving Meal. The meal is open to all members of the congregation, family, friends and neighborhood residents. Visit the Events & Schedule Page for upcoming dates.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
St. Luke's has had a Prayer Shawl Ministry for the past 6 years. The purpose is to present a tangible token of our love and prayers to individuals who are sick, grieving or otherwise in need of comfort. Dozens of shawls have been given to parish and family members over the past 6 years. Shawls are hand-knit or crocheted by a dedicated crew of parishioners, then blessed on the altar of St. Luke's before being given away.
Mitten Tree
Each year the ECW sponsors the Mitten Tree at St. Luke's. This tree is displayed outside the sanctuary for a month to be decorated with mittens, hats, scarves and loves donated by members of the parish. These donations are then gathered up and given to an organization or agency to distribute to needy children in the Des Moines area. Visit the Events & Schedule Page for upcoming dates.
Operation Christmas Child
It is not too early to begin to think about Christmas, especially Operation Christmas Child! Many things can be collected over the next 6 months to get ready to fill those shoe boxes. St. Luke’s was proud to collect and fill over 150 shoe boxes in 2009! Operation Christmas Child collected 8.2 million shoe box gifts in 13 countries in 2009, including the very first ones from Spain and Hong Kong. That’s the most boxes ever—nearly 200,000 more than the previous year. Shoe box gifts were sent to 108 countries, including Guinea Bissau and St. Kitts for the first time. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and distributed more than 77 million shoe box gifts.
Our goal for 2010 is even bigger; 200 boxes! As you go through the upcoming summer months begin to collect those little things that could be packed into a shoe box and sent to a child in need throughout the world. Are you planning a summer vacation? Those little soaps that magically appear at hotels are great for packing in shoe boxes, so collect them and bring them home! The collection box will be out now through 11/7/10. The St. Luke’s packing date will be Sunday, November 7, 2010 from 1-3pm. Operation Christmas Child’s National Collection Week will be November 15 -22. The following is a list of items that can/cannot be included in shoeboxes:
